Apple had hinted at a significant week for new product launches and is now seemingly making good on that promise. Kicking off the week are the iPhone 17e and a new iPad Air featuring a powerful M4 chip. Both devices align with earlier speculative reports, yet it’s particularly notable that Apple has managed to release these new systems at the exact same base price as their predecessors, an impressive feat given the recent global surge in memory costs.

The outcome is straightforward: as competitors raise their prices, Apple maintains stability, all while enhancing the performance gap between its offerings and other devices in the same category. This strategy positions the company to capture a progressively larger share of the mid-range customer base. Furthermore, Apple’s devices boast high performance, making them ideal platforms for virtually any AI application, whether on-device or cloud-based.

Introducing the iPhone 17e

The primary enhancement in this latest model lies within its processor. The new iPhone 17e incorporates the same chip found in the standard iPhone 17. Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of worldwide iPhone product marketing, describes this phone as “an appealing choice for consumers seeking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 lineup.”

If there’s any trade-off, it’s in the camera department; similar to the iPhone 16e, this new version uses a single-lens camera, though it now boasts an improved 2x telephoto lens. Notably, Apple’s latest video advertisement for the device transparently targets users transitioning from competing platforms.

“Our customers desire a durable product, and the iPhone 17e delivers exactly that,” stated Drance. “Featuring the A19 chip for unparalleled performance, double the base storage, an advanced camera system, and enhanced resilience, the iPhone 17e is engineered to maintain its speed, security, and value for many years ahead.”

Considering the rapid escalation of component expenses and ongoing unpredictability in manufacturing and logistics, Apple’s decision to maintain consistent pricing is remarkably impressive. The starting price remains $599 for a standard iPhone 17e configuration, as well as for an 11-inch iPad Air equipped with the M4 chip.

Within the current economic climate, Apple has evidently opted to absorb a potential impact on its profit margins. This strategic choice aims to bolster market share as rival device prices are projected to rise.

A quick look at the iPhone 17e

  • Processor: Features an A19 chip, equipped with 6 CPU cores, a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
  • Face ID is supported.
  • Storage: Starting at 256GB, which is double the initial storage capacity of the iPhone 16e.
  • Modem: Utilizes an Apple-designed C1X modem, offering up to twice the speed and 30% greater energy efficiency compared to the 5G modem in the iPhone 16e.
  • Display: A 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, capable of a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.
  • Camera: A 48MP Fusion Camera with 2x Telephoto capabilities and 4K video recording. Night mode and spatial audio are also included.
  • Colors: Available in Black, white, and soft pink.
  • Power: Apple guarantees all-day battery life, with the device reaching 50% charge in just 30 minutes. It also supports MagSafe charging up to 15 watts.
  • Cost: Starting from $599. Pre-orders commence on March 4, with general availability one week later.

The incorporation of an Apple modem offers an additional benefit: the iPhone 17e now supports satellite connectivity features, such as Emergency SOS. Furthermore, Apple states that the Ceramic Shield coating significantly enhances the iPhone 17e’s scratch resistance, making it three times more resilient than the previous generation.

The next-generation M4-powered iPad Air

Apple has also unveiled an iPad Air, now equipped with an M4 processor and optional 5G capabilities. The company asserts that this new iPad delivers up to a 30% speed increase over last year’s M3 models, and the enhancements extend beyond just performance.

It’s fair to say that the 2025 iPad Air represents a significant generational leap over its predecessors, particularly concerning processing power, AI capabilities, and connectivity. Apple highlights, for instance, that the Neural Engine operates three times faster than in the M1-powered model. Users upgrading from an M1 iPad Air can expect substantial speed improvements, with Apple promising up to 2.3 times faster performance.

“iPad Air empowers users with more avenues than ever before to foster creativity and boost productivity, providing robust performance and exceptional versatility to help them actualize their visions,” remarked Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of worldwide product marketing. “With its blistering M4 performance, remarkable AI features, and groundbreaking iPadOS 26 functionalities, there has never been a more opportune moment to acquire or upgrade to an iPad Air.”

iPad Air M4 overview

  • Processor: Equipped with an M4 chip featuring an 8-core CPU, a 9-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine.
  • Memory: Offers 12GB of unified memory with 120 GBps bandwidth, representing a 50% increase over the previous model.
  • N1 chip: Includes support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.
  • Modem: Cellular models are upgraded with the C1X modem, which boasts up to 50% faster data speeds and 30% improved energy efficiency compared to its predecessor.
  • Display: Available in both 11-inch and 13-inch screen sizes.
  • Camera: Features 12MP cameras on both the front and back.
  • Cost: Starts at $599 for the 11-inch model and $799 for the 13-inch model.

The core elements of these upgrades are undeniable: enhanced speed from the new processor and a considerable boost in overall performance, largely due to the doubling of memory. This translates into a significantly faster user experience, ensuring these iPads, like all Apple devices, possess ample power to manage Apple Intelligence and various other AI applications. Within the tablet market, it’s difficult to find a competing product that rivals this offering.

Additional Apple products are slated for release later this week. Expectations include new Mac models, such as a $599 A18 Pro MacBook and M5 Pro MacBook Pros, along with updated Apple displays, among other announcements.
