According to CNN, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has uncovered a potential security incident on a network responsible for handling wiretaps and foreign intelligence surveillance warrants.

In a statement to CNN, the FBI confirmed the event, stating, “The FBI identified and addressed suspicious activities on FBI networks, and we have leveraged all technical capabilities to respond.”

While the agency has not elaborated on its statement, concerns persist that this could be a state-sponsored attack, possibly from a nation like China. Notably, last year, both the bureau and the US Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency issued warnings about ongoing assaults by the Chinese ransomware group, Ghost, targeting various US organizations.

The FBI’s IT system security has been a subject of scrutiny previously. For instance, a 2007 Government Accounting Office report concluded that the FBI’s infrastructure possessed weaker security than a typical private company. Furthermore, in 2012, an agent’s laptop was reportedly compromised by a hacker, resulting in allegations that one million Apple UDIDs were pilfered.

While the bureau has undoubtedly reinforced its security protocols since those earlier incidents, CNN nonetheless reported another alleged security breach at an FBI field office in February 2023.
