Will language barriers soon become a relic of the past? Numerous companies are exploring the integration of AI to address this linguistic challenge, potentially revitalizing voice communication.

T-Mobile is poised to launch network-based real-time translation services, supporting over 50 languages. This new offering, currently undergoing beta testing, is anticipated to be accessible to all T-Mobile subscribers, regardless of their phone model.

This approach diverges from comparable services provided by Google and Apple, which typically mandate users possess a modern smartphone capable of executing the translation software directly on the device.

Announcing the service, T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan stated in a news release that: “By bringing real-time AI directly into our network, we’re delivering more than connectivity — turning conversations into community, starting with Live Translation.”

To activate this new service, subscribers will simply dial *87*, enabling real-time translation of their conversations. Only one participant in the call needs to be a T-Mobile network user.

This system stands to greatly benefit multinational corporations aiming to connect with their remote workforces, as well as individuals traveling internationally. While the service primarily focuses on European languages, it also includes support for Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi. It remains unconfirmed whether the service will incur costs post-beta phase.
