Focusing on its Mac lineup, Apple on Tuesday refreshed the globe’s top-selling laptop, the MacBook Air, now featuring an M5 chip. Additionally, the company revealed powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max chips for its MacBook Pro models, a new Studio Display, and an entirely new Studio Display XDR.

These recent product debuts come on the heels of Monday’s announcement of an updated M4-powered iPad Air and the brand-new iPhone 17e, with expectations of further revelations throughout the week.

The M5 chip powering these Macs stands out as the primary innovation. It guarantees exceptional performance, further solidifying Apple’s lead in power and efficiency within its category. One could contend that these represent the finest laptops currently available on the market.

Modest price adjustments have been noted. For instance, the M5 Pro and M5 Max Macs are approximately $200 pricier than their previous versions, and the M5 MacBook Air now commences at $1,099, up from $999. However, this price hike is mitigated by the doubling of storage capacity in the entry-level configurations.

Apple Advances with M5 Chip Technology

The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are specifically designed for AI tasks, leveraging Apple’s innovative Fusion Architecture. This chip design integrates two dies into a singular system-on-a-chip, ensuring substantial performance enhancements. Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max boast a fresh CPU configuration with up to 18 cores, comprising 6 ‘super’ cores and 12 novel performance cores, all optimized for energy-efficient, multithreaded professional applications, collectively achieving up to 30% quicker performance.

These chip designs are inherently impressive, integrating a robust CPU, a scalable GPU, a dedicated Media Engine, a unified memory controller, a Neural Engine, and native Thunderbolt 5 support.

Apple provided several figures to illustrate the performance capabilities of these chips:

  • Professional tasks see a 30% performance boost.
  • AI operations are accelerated by 4x.
  • Ray-tracing performance is 35% higher compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max systems.

“The M5 Pro and M5 Max represent a monumental advance for Apple silicon, utilizing our novel Fusion Architecture to expand the capacities of Apple silicon while upholding its foundational principles of performance, power efficiency, and unified memory architecture,” stated Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technologies. “These chips collectively highlight our unwavering commitment to innovation.”

Disregard the abundance of technical specifications. The crucial takeaway is that each of these new Macs will provide significantly enhanced performance over their predecessors. These chips firmly establish Apple’s escalating renown for delivering the world’s leading and most capable computing systems.

Introducing the MacBook Air with M5 Chip

Apple appears quite satisfied with the M5 MacBook Air, touting it as up to four times quicker than the M4 model for artificial intelligence tasks, and an impressive 9.5 times faster than the M1-equipped MacBook Air.

The integration of the M5 chip brings substantial performance within reach for the majority of consumers, and it will only fuel the increasing demand for these Macs among enterprise professionals.

“The refreshed MacBook Air, powered by the M5, delivers remarkable performance and expanded capabilities to the world’s favored laptop,” commented John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. “Equipped with the M5, the MacBook Air effortlessly handles diverse tasks, from daily productivity to demanding creative projects.”

  • The M5 processor in the Air features a 10-core CPU.
  • It includes an up-to-10-core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator integrated into each core.
  • Base storage now begins with a 512GB SSD, offering roughly double the read/write speeds compared to the previous Mac iteration.

Pre-orders for these devices commence on March 4, with general availability starting March 11. As previously stated, pricing begins at $1,099.

The New MacBook Pro (M5 Pro and M5 Max Models)

Designed for professionals and equipped to handle the most demanding workloads, the new MacBook Pro models are engineered with such advanced specifications that they are expected to effortlessly manage any task. “The MacBook Pro, featuring M5 Pro and M5 Max, fundamentally redefines the capabilities of a professional laptop, now operating up to four times faster than the preceding generation,” Ternus stated.

“Thanks to Neural Accelerators integrated into the GPU, the latest MacBook Pro allows professionals to execute advanced Large Language Models (LLMs) directly on the device, unlocking unique functionalities unmatched by other laptops—all while preserving outstanding battery longevity,” he added. “Coupled with even quicker unified memory and storage, it enables users to advance their projects significantly, opening up new avenues and expanding the limits of their creative and productive potential.”

Alternatively, the entry-level 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro is available, with prices starting at $1,699.

Introducing Apple’s Latest Studio Displays

Naturally, even for frequent notebook users, situations arise where a larger screen enhances the computing experience, especially during demanding professional workflows. This need is addressed by Apple’s two new displays: a reimagined 27-inch Studio Display for general use and a new 27-inch Studio Display XDR specifically designed for advanced professional tasks.

Key enhancements in this generation involve the inclusion of Thunderbolt 5 support, a significant upgrade from the Thunderbolt 3 found in previous Apple displays. This enables the daisy-chaining of multiple displays and accessories, along with offering considerably greater bandwidth. The improved cameras now support features such as Desk View, among others.

However, the most significant advancement in display technology is the transition to Mini-LED with HDR. Implementing this technology in the Studio Display XDR leads to substantial enhancements in contrast, deeper black levels, and superior HDR performance. It also results in a brighter screen, proving especially beneficial for professional video editors, as will the noticeably quicker and smoother 120Hz refresh rate in the premium display. Furthermore, these displays now support AdobeRGB, a feature previously absent. Astute observers may notice that while the 5K LCD panel in the standard model is unchanged, it now benefits from vastly improved underlying technology.

“Apple has consistently pioneered the industry in providing the most sophisticated displays globally for professionals to achieve their finest work, and today, with the launch of the new Studio Display family, we reiterate that commitment,” stated Ternus, who is widely considered a strong candidate for Apple’s next CEO.
