Apple’s significant week of Mac, iPhone, and iPad launches progressed on Wednesday with the introduction of an entirely new $599 Apple laptop. The predictions, which I believe originated with Ming-Chi Kuo last year, proved accurate: the MacBook Neo is a 13-inch Mac laptop featuring an A18 Pro chip. This marks the debut of a Mac utilizing a mobile processor, serving as a clear testament, if one were needed, to the engineering prowess of Apple Silicon.

“We are tremendously thrilled to unveil the MacBook Neo, bringing the quintessential Mac experience at an unprecedented price point,” stated John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, during the hardware announcement. “Engineered from scratch to be more accessible to a wider audience, the MacBook Neo is a laptop only Apple could envision. Its uniqueness is unmatched in the market.”

Furthermore, it stands as the premier laptop choice for educational settings, available at a mere $499.

The Mac: An Ideal Upgrade for Windows Users

The corporation is overtly aiming at consumers looking to transition from Windows to a superior operating system, complemented by suitable hardware. The Apple website’s product pages feature a “Switch from PC to Mac” section, providing assistance and information to help users determine if now is the opportune moment to upgrade to a Mac.

“A pivotal moment,” observed Asymco analyst Horace Dediu. “First Mac with a mobile processor and the end of the disruptive arc of mobile computing. From Motorola to Intel to Apple silicon M, now personal computing is an accessory to mobile computing. A sharp punctuation point.”

“We are incredibly enthusiastic to extend the enchantment of Mac to an even broader global audience,” commented Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Regarding the Processor

Why opt for a mobile chip? Partially, it’s driven by the company’s ambition to capture a larger segment of the PC market, aiming to persuade Windows users, hesitant about transitioning to Windows 11, to make the switch. However, it’s also a testament to Apple’s capability. Apple’s silicon design divisions have excelled so remarkably in processor development that the M-series chips powering most Macs are now so advanced within the industry that Apple has, in essence, carved out an entirely new competitive arena.

This Mac truly targets the core segment of the Windows OEM market, signaling a critical warning to Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, and all other participants in that sector. They ought to have anticipated this development, observing the progression of Apple Silicon, which fundamentally underpins this product launch.

Below are some initial responses from various industry players:

  • “Not an overstatement: smartest thing Apple has done in years,” MG Siegler.
  • “MacBook Neo being $599 really is the nightmare scenario for Windows OEM’s,” Zac Bowden, Windows Central.
  • “Every kid is going to want this to replace their Chromebook at school,” Ernest Wong, Head of Research Baskin Wealth.
  • “It’s easily the best value for students, hands down,” Creative Strategies, Max Weinbach.
  • “I can’t believe they finally do an on-stage keynote and don’t stream,” Parker Ortolani, 9to5Mac.

Integrating a mobile chip into these devices does not diminish performance for the majority of users, given that these systems are entirely capable of managing typical daily operations. Apple asserts that the Neo offers up to 50% faster web browsing and can execute on-device AI tasks three times more rapidly than the top-selling PC equipped with the newest Intel Core Ultra 5 and 8GB RAM.

The processor features a 6-core CPU, comprising two performance and four efficiency cores, alongside a 5-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine, and operates without a fan, ensuring silent performance. This mobile processor design also contributes to their energy efficiency and a slim profile of just half an inch when closed.

Additional Specifications of the Neo

Apple introduced two variants of the new 2.7-pound Mac: one featuring Touch ID and one without. The $599 iteration includes 256GB of storage and lacks Touch ID on the keyboard, whereas the $699 version offers double the storage (512GB) and incorporates Touch ID.

  • The MacBook Neo is offered in silver, indigo, blush, and citrus (or, as typically referred to outside Apple, silver, blue, pink, and bright yellow).
  • It features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2,408×1,506-pixel resolution, capable of displaying a billion colors and supporting a single external monitor. According to Apple, this anti-reflective display boasts superior brightness and resolution compared to most PC laptops in its price category.
  • The Neo provides a 16-hour battery life, two USB-C ports (one supporting USB 3), Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, a headphone jack, and stereo speakers.
  • Included are a Magic Keyboard and a spacious Multi-Touch trackpad.
  • Additionally, the systems come equipped with a 1080p FaceTime camera, dual microphones, and macOS 26 Tahoe pre-installed. This ensures compatibility with Apple Intelligence and all other features characteristic of a Mac.

A notable absence is a variety of build-to-order configurations for these systems; they are largely marketed with a “one size fits all” approach, and extra memory cannot be added. (Apple would probably contend that for users seeking greater memory, a more premium model like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro would be a more suitable choice.)

An Additional Point

Considering this is the world’s inaugural Apple laptop within this pricing bracket, it’s fair to anticipate widespread popularity — but what about its ecological impact? The company asserts that these systems represent its lowest-carbon notebooks, crafted with 60% recycled materials, specifically incorporating 90% recycled aluminum and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. Furthermore, the MacBook Neo is produced using 45% renewable electricity, sourced from wind and solar, throughout its entire supply chain.

The new MacBook Neo is currently available for pre-order and will arrive in Apple stores starting March 11. I foresee Apple selling millions, especially since this product, coupled with the iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air Apple unveiled this week, enables entry into the Apple ecosystem for merely $599. The forthcoming iPad enhancement is expected to broaden this accessibility even further.
