The newest VS Code update brings pre-bundled chat customization packages, featuring skills, commands, agents, MCP servers, and hooks.
Microsoft has launched Visual Studio Code 1.110, a refresh for its widely-used code editor. This update enhances agents for extended and intricate operations by offering developers expanded agent customization options, improved session handling, and greater transparency and command, according to the company.
Unveiled on March 4, VS Code 1.110—identified as the February 2026 release—is now available for download across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms via code.visualstudio.com.
As a preview feature, Agent plugins represent pre-compiled collections of chat modifications downloadable from various plugin stores. Microsoft explained that a single plugin can integrate various elements such as slash commands, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, agent capabilities, bespoke agents, and hooks.
An experimental addition, Agentic browser tools, equips agents with utilities for interpreting and engaging with VS Code’s built-in browser. Microsoft notes that when an agent engages with a webpage, it receives real-time updates on content changes, along with any console warnings or errors. These tools function immediately without requiring additional installations.
The agent debug panel, currently a preview feature, offers a live display of chat occurrences, encompassing chat customization actions, system prompts, and tool invocations. It allows developers to ascertain which prompt files, skills, hooks, and various other customizations are active for a given session. Microsoft stated that this panel supplants the former Diagnostics chat action with a more comprehensive and elaborate perspective.
This release, VS Code 1.110, succeeds the February 2025 launch of VS Code 1.109, which similarly introduced improvements to agent functionalities.
Other notable features introduced in VS Code 1.110 consist of:
- Users are now able to generate agent customization files straight from a chat interaction by employing the new
/create-*slash commands when in agent mode. - Any plans generated by the Plan agent are now saved to session memory, ensuring their availability throughout subsequent conversational exchanges.
- Context compaction provides users with the ability to manually condense chat history, thereby optimizing available context space.
- Regarding chat accessibility, developers can maximize chat functionality thanks to enhancements in screen reader support, notification alerts, and keyboard-based navigation.
- The VS Code terminal now integrates support for the Kitty graphics protocol, enabling detailed image rendering directly within the terminal window. Microsoft stated that applications utilizing this protocol can send and show images with advanced features like display arrangement, image handling, and cursor manipulation.
- In anticipation of the forthcoming TypeScript 6.0 and 7.0 versions, the identifiers for built-in JavaScript and TypeScript settings have been unified.
