Google has unveiled a preview of its Developer Knowledge API and the accompanying Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. These tools collectively establish a machine-readable interface to Google’s official developer documentation.

Initially revealed on February 4, the Developer Knowledge API serves as the definitive programmatic resource for Google’s public documentation. Through this API, developers can access content from sites like firebase.google.com, developer.android.com, and docs.cloud.google.com, among others. It allows for searching and retrieval of these documentation pages in Markdown format.

Meanwhile, the complementary MCP server empowers AI-driven development tools to interpret Google developer documentation. This capability facilitates more dependable features, including providing implementation advice, assisting with troubleshooting, and performing comparative analyses. The Developer Knowledge MCP server can seamlessly integrate with a user’s IDE or AI assistant. Google highlighted its compatibility with numerous widely used assistants and tools, guaranteeing that AI models receive the most precise and current information available.

For complete details, visit developers.google.com. Currently, the preview primarily offers high-quality, unstructured Markdown content. Looking ahead to general availability, Google intends to incorporate support for structured content, including dedicated code samples and API reference entities. Furthermore, the overall documentation collection will grow to encompass a broader range of Google’s developer resources, while also working to minimize re-indexing delays.
